Madagascar visa: e-visa or visa on arrival?
Everything about the Madagascar visa: the two ways to obtain it, the conditions, the validity period and the simplest way to apply for the Madagascar e-visa online.
The Madagascar e-visa (online)
The e-visa is an electronic authorisation requested online before departure. You fill in a form, pay online, then receive your Madagascar visa by email as a PDF within 48–72 h. It is the recommended solution: no airport queue, file prepared in advance, and you can apply even without fixed travel dates.
Visa on arrival (airport)
The Madagascar visa on arrival is issued at the counter of international airports — Ivato (Antananarivo), Nosy Be — on presentation of the passport, return ticket and payment of fees. Practical, but subject to crowds and queues after a long flight.
The same official document, single entry
Whether you choose the e-visa or the visa on arrival, it is the tourist visa issued by the Malagasy authorities, valid for 15, 30, 60 or 90 days.
Single entry
One stay allowed. To return, a new application is required.
Passport valid 6 months
At least 6 months of validity after arrival and 2 blank pages.
Tourist use
The e-visa covers tourism and visits. Business or long-stay trips fall under other categories.
Short-stay visa and « transformable visa » (TREDI)
The tourist visa up to 90 days is a non-transformable short-stay visa: it cannot be converted on site into a long-stay permit. To settle, work or invest in Madagascar, you need a transformable long stay, known as a « TREDI visa » (Transformable, for Resident, Student, Seconded, Investor). This category is applied for through consular services, with a specific file, and is outside the scope of the simple tourist e-visa.
For a classic trip — holidays, tour, visiting relatives — the tourist e-visa by duration is more than enough.
